Braves are Winning, Kawakami is Dealing, and Kelly is Hitting…Feels Like June All Over Again!

After yesterday’s 8-2 win over the Dodgers I feel a need to reflect over the rollercoaster that has been the Braves’ 2009 season (this far). The Braves took three out of four from the Dodgers and could have very well taken all four games. I’m not putting the cart in front of the horse, but assuming the Braves take at least one of these games against the Nationals they could be 4.5-5.5 games behind when the Phillies come to Atlanta…sound familiar?

On June 29 the Braves were coming off of a semi-successful season of interleague play. One of those games saw Kawakami going head to head with Roy Halladay, and Kelly Johnson still remembering how to hit. The Braves were 5 games behind in the division when the Phillies showed up. You all know what happened next, three wins later and the Braves are only 2 games back and back in contention.

Fast forward to August 10. The Braves have just put together a three game winning streak against the best team in the N.L. A series that saw Kawakami put together a great outing and Kelly Johnson smacking the ball to all ends of the field, and here comes the Phillies…what a season!

Prado Earns Everyday Spot

I don’t have time to write a long posting right now, but I just saw from Mark Bowman that after his 4 RBI day Martin Prado has earned a spot as the Braves everyday second baseman. This comes after yet another great performance from him on the field and, as I previously posted, a pretty down year for Kelly Johnson. I’m looking forward to seeing Prado in the lineup everyday.

Also, I mentioned Mark Bowman. Mark is the MLB beat writter for the Braves. In other words, he follows around the Braves and writes stories for their website. Mark also has an MLBlog and he does a GREAT job with it. Here’s the link to Mark’s Blog: click. Check it out and send Mark some love!

Time for Kelly Johnson to find his groove

In the 8th inning of last night’s loss to the Yankees Mariano Rivera was brought in to protect the Yankees then two run lead. I kind of chuckled when I saw who was strolling to the plate for the Braves…Kelly Johnson. I thought to myself, “Can’t this guy get a break?” As most of you already know, Johnson has had a tough time at the plate as of late. As a matter of fact his batting average was .297 in May and so far it is a dismal .132 in the month of June. To make matters even worse he’s had only 2 RBI’s this month after knocking in 18 over the first two months of the season. Bobby Cox has shuffled him every where from 1st to 7th in the lineup trying to find Kelly a groove, but nothing seems to work. Often times we see that when a guy goes into a small slump it turns into a HUGE slump because he’s let it get to his head. Maybe that’s what has happened to Johnson, but whatever it is, it needs to be fixed soon. I say give Kelly a little more time to find his swing, if he doesn’t, let him take a little vacation to AA much like the one Francoeur took last season.

Speaking of Frenchy…how many people were surprised to see him launch one last night? I know I was, but let’s see about 20 more of those by October before we consider taking Francoeur off the trading block.

And finally, the deadline to vote for the All-Star game is 11:59 pm on July 2. At last check McCann was still trailing Yadier Molina, which is ludicrous considering he is beating him in almost every category. Hey, I don’t like that the fans vote for the starters but this is the system for right now. So, let’s keep those votes coming and push McCann to the top!
